Endowed Funds

As opposed to annual gifts, which cover yearly operating expenses, endowed funds provide long-term income to assist with all of Deerfield’s needs. Because only the income from the principal – not the principal itself – is spent, endowed funds provide money for Deerfield in perpetuity. Endowed funds can be established for a specified purpose, or as unrestricted funds to meet the greatest needs of the school. For more on stewardship and establishing an endowed fund, see

A Remarkable Reunion

Lou Greer ’55 expresses his thoughts about the 2013 Reunion and his brother, Phil, who took the occasion to step down from his duties as Chairman of the Board of Trustees: “Dee and I thoroughly enjoyed the reunion, both because my brother (Phil Greer ’53) was remarkable in his reminiscing about his 20+ years on the board, and having the opportunity to spend a few hours with Jay (Morsman), Terry Fuller, John Glasheen, Mike Grant,

Capital Giving

capitalgiving Deerfield’s endowment began in 1939, with a bequest from Jennie Maria Arms Sheldon, whose gifts included the George Albert Arms Science Building, given in memory of her father. Over the years, such gifts of generosity and vision have helped the endowment grow to its current value of over $500 million, providing a crucial portion of the school’s operating budget each year, and ensuring the best possible experience for Deerfield students of the future.

The Deerfield Forum

In 2016, Deerfield’s Vision—as described in our Strategic Plan for Inclusion—stated in part: “Diverse perspectives fuel creative and innovative thinking and build empathy and consideration.” Next year, as a way of encouraging schoolwide discussion and ensuring “diverse perspectives” on issues of contemporary urgency, we will fully institutionalize the “Deerfield Forum,” which was first proposed to provide regular, sustained, and, in some instances, required opportunities for listening and conversation among the student body. The Forum will model scholarly and civic engagement; and, by staging conversations among scholars, professionals, and civic leaders, promote constructive dialogue and active open-mindedness—long a defining feature of Deerfield’s intellectual culture. In support of the Deerfield Forum, we will appoint an external advisory board that will include distinguished alumni, trustees, faculty, staff, and students drawn from all facets of the Deerfield community. It has led us here to this wonderful and in many ways improbable moment, Deerfield’s 221st Commencement . . .
