Health

Health and wellness is as a valued aspect of the Deerfield Academy education. We recently expanded our health classes to both ninth and tenth grade years. Students learn more about the self (identity, values, priorities) as well as how to sustain healthy habits of self-care (stress management, nutrition, fitness, mindfulness, etc.). We also cover topics such as mental health, relationships, sex, and sexuality; however, these topics are covered in greater detail during the second year of health class during the students’ tenth grade year. All health classes use a social justice lens that not only allows students to better understand how each topic relates to themselves, but also how different aspects of health are influenced by the systems and context that surround us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Health and wellness classes must be taken by all students for a term in both 9th and 10th grade. In ninth grade, students learn about themselves (identity, values, priorities) as well as how to sustain healthy habits of self-care (stress management, nutrition, fitness, mindfulness, etc.). In tenth grade, greater attention is placed on such topics as mental health, relationships, sex, and sexuality.

CPR instruction is offered throughout the school year, but is most often taken in the Spring in conjunction with our Lifeguarding course. Contact our Aquatics Director, Jason Cook, for more info.
