DORMITORIES Barton This boys dormitory is named for advertising great and congressman Bruce Barton, who is known for “outstanding services to America and to Deerfield Academy.” In the late 1920s, he began writing fundraising letters for the Academy. This campaign provided a generous base to Deerfield Academy’s foundation, and funded the construction of fourteen of the Academy’s buildings. Head of School Dr. John P.N. Austin Dr. John P.N. Austin became Deerfield Academy’s 56th Head of School in July of 2019. Prior to Deerfield, Dr. Austin served as Headmaster at King’s Academy in Madaba, Jordan, and before that as Academic Dean at St. Andrew’s School in Middletown, Delaware, where he joined the faculty in 1987. Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to consult with medical and public health experts, members of the Board of Trustees, and my leadership team. Based on those discussions, I have decided to extend online learning for all students through the end of our Spring Term—May 21.
I am delighted to have this opportunity to welcome you to campus for our Fall Family Weekend. I want to start by thanking you for entrusting your children to us and for allowing us to play such a meaningful role in their education and development. Deerfield is enriched every day by the voices, perspectives, and experiences that each of your children brings to this school.
As it is the beginning of school, I thought I would begin my remarks by taking us to the Boyden Library. I’ve spent some early mornings there recently, preparing for the school year, and it’s fast becoming one of my favorite spots. I sit in the reading room to the side at a small table, under the watchful portrait of Mrs. Boyden.

Almost 50 years after graduating in 1967 finds me still close to Deerfield Academy. I have lived in West Deerfield, operating Clarkdale Fruit Farms first with my father Fred ’29, and now with my son Ben ’96. Three years ago I moved to another house on the farm, and can now view Mt. Pocumtuck out of my kitchen window. I have enjoyed many friendships with faculty, staff, and students, and now my children continue the
