DAVID P. AGNEW FUND

Established in 2000 with a gift from David P. Agnew ’44 to support faculty salaries.

FREDERIC B. ASCHE ’23P MEMORIAL FUND

Established by a grant in 1984 from The Ruby R. Vale Foundation in memory of Frederic B. Asche ’23.

FRANK L. BOYDEN FUND

Established in 1972 with a bequest from Frank L. Boyden, Headmaster 1902-1968.

HELEN C. BOYDEN CHAIR OF SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS

Established in 1955 by Charles E. Merrill, father of Charles Jr. ’38, in honor of Mrs. Boyden’s fiftieth year at Deerfield.

HELEN CHILDS BOYDEN DISTINGUISHED CHAIR IN TEACHING

Established in 1961 by Mrs. Gordon W. Reed, parent of Thomas ’51 and grandparent of Andrew ’86, in honor of Mrs. Boyden.

LAWRENCE M. BOYLE SCHOOLMASTER’S CHAIR

Established in 2005 with gifts from alumni, parents, and friends in memory of Larry Boyle, Deerfield faculty 1957–2005, the fund supports a member of the faculty who embodies Larry’s legacy as teacher, coach, mentor and friend.

CLASS OF 1952 CHAIR IN MATHEMATICS

Established in 2002 by the Class of 1952 on their 50th reunion, this Chair is awarded to an outstanding teacher and mentor.

CLASS OF 1954 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE CHAIR

Established in 2004 by members of the Class of 1954 upon their 50th Reunion.

CLASS OF 1960 FUND FOR FACULTY

Established in 2010 by members of the Class of 1960 upon their 50th Reunion, the fund honors the faculty of the late 1950s and early 1960s and supports faculty salaries and professional development opportunities.

CLASS OF 2005 ALBANY ROAD CHAIR

Established in 2004 by non-alumni parents and friends of the Class of 2005, the fund supports an accomplished junior member of the Deerfield faculty and intends to encourage, inspire, and invigorate gifted faculty at this point in their career.

CLASS OF 2010 ENDOWED FUND FOR YOUNG FACULTY

Established in 2010 by the Senior Parents and friends of the Class of 2010, the fund supports the hire of a young teaching faculty with limited teaching experience and can also provide for professional development or related expenses.

CLASS OF 2012 SCHOLAR FUND

Established in 2012 by the Senior Parents and friends of the Class of 2012, the fund will be used to attract exceptional teachers to campus and to support expansion of Deerfield’s devoted faculty.

ROBERT B. CROW CHAIR IN HISTORY

Established in 1981 by the Allegheny Foundation and from an alumnus in memory of Robert B. Crow, Deerfield faculty 1943 – 1979.

JOEL DEAN FOUNDATION FUND FOR FACULTY SUPPORT

Established in 1987 by the Joel Dean Foundation and Jurrien P. Dean ’65.

DEERFIELD CHAIRS

Established in 1970 by an anonymous donor for the creation of three Deerfield Chairs: one in the Social Sciences and two in the Humanities.

ROBERT AND HARRIET DEWEY CHAIR IN ADOLESCENT MEDICINE

Established in 2001 by the Board of Trustees to recognize the long and dedicated Deerfield service of Bob ’49 and Harriet Dewey.

DISTINGUISHED YOUNG TEACHER’S CHAIR

Established in 1994 by Julian H. Robertson Jr., father of Spencer ’93 and Alexander ’97.

JAMEE C. FIELD FACULTY FUND

Established in 2001 by Jamee Field ’93 for support of the Deerfield teaching faculty.

FRANKLIN FISKE ’30 FUND

Established in 2000 by Franklin H. Fiske ’30, the fund supports faculty salaries.

EDMUND B. FITZGERALD ’43 FUND

Established in 2013 by a gift from Ashland Inc. Directors’ Charitable Award Program in memory of Edmund B. Fitzgerald ’43, this endowed fund will enhance faculty salaries.

FRIEDMAN FUND

Established in 1984 by Mr. and Mrs. Jack N. Friedman, parents of Mitchell ’70 and Frederick ’75, and grandparents of Jack Chester ’93, and Nicholas ’04 and Alexander Hammerschlag ’04.

GENERAL ENDOWMENT FUND FOR FACULTY CHAIRS AND SALARIES

Established in 1986 to accommodate undesignated gifts for faculty salaries.

GREER FAMILY DISTINGUISHED TEACHING CHAIR

Established in 1998 by Mr. and Mrs. Philip Greer ’53 and their daughter Elizabeth ’94, this fund honors the legacy of great teaching at Deerfield.

HAGNEY FAMILY FUND

Established in 2012 through the generosity of Paul J.S. Haigney ’78 and Tracey Roberts, this endowed fund will be used to support the salaries of our faculty.

Established in 1929 by Edward S. Harkness to support faculty salaries.

JOHN S. HILSON ’43 CHAIR IN THE FINE ARTS

Established in 1994 with a bequest from John S. Hilson ’43, Deerfield trustee and father of Dwight R. ’75 and William E. Hilson ’73.

INDEPENDENCE FOUNDATION OF PHILADELPHIA TEACHING ENDOWMENT

Established in 1960 to support a full time teaching faculty member.

ROBERT E. KAUFMANN DISTINGUISHED YOUNG TEACHER’S CHAIR

Established in 2002 by alumni and parents in honor of Robert E. Kaufmann, Deerfield Headmaster 1980 – 1994, this Chair is awarded to a younger member of the faculty who manifests the ideal of the dedicated Deerfield teacher.

CLAUDE AND LORE KELLY FUND

Established in 2004 with a gift from the estate of Lore K. Kelly, wife of Claude C. Kelly Jr. ’45, the fund supports faculty salaries.

JOHN C. LEGGAT FUND

Established in 1975 with a bequest from Judge John C. Leggat, parent of John ’41, Thomas ’43, and Richard Leggat ’44.

BARBARA AND IRA LIPMAN FUND

Established in 2010 by Gustave “Gus” Lipman ’89 in honor of his parents, the fund supports faculty at Deerfield.

LOUIS FAMILY FUND

Established in 1965 by Mrs. John J. Louis, her sons John J. Jr. ’43, Herbert ’46 and Michael ’49, the fund supports the Louis Chairs in English, Humanities, and Language and Literature.

JULIE D. AND HERBERT J. LOUIS TEACHING FELLOW

Established in 1998 by Henry ’69, Clifton ’73, Steven ’80, Timothy Louis ’82, Jon and Carrie Louis Hulburd P’05,’07,’10, and Joseph and Margaret Louis Moreland P’97,’99,’01, to honor their father and mother, the fund is used to teach, train, and develop new teachers.

Established in 1993, this fund supports faculty salaries or professional development opportunities.

ROBERT W. MCGLYNN CHAIR

Established in 1987 with a grant from The Brown Foundation and gifts from McGlynn’s former students and friends.

REV. G. RICHARD & JOAN MILLER MCKELVEY COUNSELING AND HUMAN SERVICES FUND

Established in 2002 by the children, family and friends of Dick and Joan McKelvey, parents of Kathleen McK. Burke, Stephen ’77, Richard ’79, Mark ’81, and Kevin ’83, and grandparents of Matthew ’10 and Meaghan McKelvey ’13, the fund supports Deerfield’s Counseling and Human Services Department and honors Dick’s and Joan’s lifelong commitment to others. Additional gifts were made in Dick’s memory.

EDWIN T. MEREDITH III ’50 CHAIR

Established in 2000 by Edwin T. “Ted” Meredith ’50, the fund supports a young faculty member.

MARY AND ROBERT MERRIAM ’43 DISTINGUISHED CHAIR IN AMERICAN STUDIES

Established in 1998 by alumni and friends to honor Mary and Robert Merriam, Deerfield faculty 1948-1970.

CHARLES E. MERRILL FUND FOR FACULTY SALARIES

Established in 1973 by the Charles E. Merrill Trust. Mr. Merrill was father of Charles E. Jr. ’38.

STEPHEN MONG ’88 ENDOWMENT FUND

Established in 2013, this fund will provide faculty support, specifically for Chinese language teachers.

MURPHY DISTINGUISHED SENIOR CHAIR IN LANGUAGE

Established in 1999 by Thomas W. Murphy Jr. ’37 in honor of his father, Thomas Sr., the Chair is part of The Murphy Educational Initiative.

Established in 1987 by The Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Foundation and S. Truman Olin Jr. ’50.

DAVID POND DEAN OF ADVANCEMENT CHAIR FUND

Established in 2015 through the generosity of current and former members of the Deerfield Academy Board of Trustees in honor of David Pond P’92,’98 H’54 to recognize his extraordinary devotion and accomplishments during his thirty-four years with the Academy, this endowed fund will support the position of the Dean of Advancement.

GLORIA C.Y. PONG MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT FUND

Established through the generosity of Dario Chiu-Yee Pong ’87 in memory of his mother, this endowed fund will provide faculty support, specifically for Chinese language faculty.

ROBERTSON DISTINGUISHED CHAIR IN THE TEACHING OF RELIGION AT DEERFIELD

Established in 2002 by Mr. and Mrs. Julian H. Robertson Jr., parents of Spencer ’93 and Alexander ’97, and the Robertson Foundation.

GARRET SCHENCK MENTOR’S CHAIR

Established in 2001 by Richard Scaife ’50 in honor of his long-term friendship with Garret Schenck ’50, the Chair supports an exceptional member of the faculty who represents the true archetypal coach and mentor.

SCHOOLMASTER’S CHAIR

Established in 1976 with a bequest from Henry A. Field, Class of 1887, trustee and longtime friend of Deerfield.

J. CLEMENT SCHULER DISTINGUISHED CHAIR

Established in 2003 with a bequest from J. Clement Schuler, music faculty from 1935 – 1976, this Chair honors Clem’s dedication to Deerfield and legacy as a teacher.

JIM SMITH TEACHING FELLOW CHAIR

Established in 2013 by an Anonymous donor to commemorate the work of James S. Smith in educating generations of Deerfield students that success in life requires not only academic excellence but also focus, discipline, loyalty and strong moral character. This chair is awarded to young faculty members who best exemplify Coach Smith’s vision of a Deerfield education.

Established in 1973 with a bequest from John K. Starkweather, parent of James ’41.

DR. WILLIAM B. STEM CHAIR

Established in 1975 with a bequest from Mrs. Samuel G. Stem, in memory of her son, Dr. William Stem ’37.

RICHARD SWAIN ’29 MEMORIAL FUND

Established in 1995 with a bequest from Richard Swain ’29 to support faculty salaries.

RUPERT C. THOMPSON JR. TEACHING CHAIR

Established in 1987 by The Hope Foundation in memory of Rupert C. Thompson Jr., parent of Peter C. ’51 and David C. Thompson ’53.

WALLACE WILSON VISITING SCHOLAR CHAIR

Established in 2000 by Wallace Wilson ’47 with additional gifts from Mr. Wilson’s stepson, William “Will” Mathis ’84, the fund supports the Wilson Visiting Fellow each year.

YAU FAMILY CHAIR IN CHINESE STUDIES

Established in 2006 by Cecilia and Sonny Tai Nin Yau ’68, parents of Frederick ’93 and Nicholas ’95, this Chair will support a member of the faculty who promotes Chinese language, history and/or culture.

 

Frequently Asked Questions

Upon graduating from Deerfield, alumni enter a diverse network of former Deerfield students. Deerfield alumni have ventured into almost every area of employment, and many are at the top of their respective fields. The advantages of this vast network are numerous and significant, as every member of the Deerfield family receives the following:

Alumni are also eligible for alumni awards, such as the Ashley Award, Heritage Award, and the Mimi Morsman Award.

There are no membership fees or dues for members of the Deerfield family, but Deerfield does ask for assistance in a few areas. First of all, in order for Deerfield to have the most up-to-date records possible, we encourage members to keep us apprised of their current contact info. Alumni are also urged to direct all concerns and suggestions regarding Deerfield’s operations through the Executive Committee, the governing body of the Alumni Association. The committee acts as the voice of the alumni body, and works closely with the school administration. In order to keep tuition affordable and the quality of a Deerfield education at its highest, the Academy depends upon the continuing support of alumni and their families. This support can take the form of annual or capital gifts, or time spent volunteering on behalf of Deerfield.
