As an athlete, John played soccer and swam in high school and earned All-America Honorable Mention as a member of his high school swim team.

He writes: "The boys swimming program at Deerfield enjoys a unique and storied tradition. In conjunction with the Academy’s mission to nurture the mind, body, and spirit, team members strive to realize and perpetuate the promise of that tradition in all areas of school life."
