Deerfield has a long tradition of attracting and nurturing student-athletes who bring energy, talent, and enthusiasm to both the classroom and the hardwood. Whether you are likely to begin on our freshman-sophomore or junior varsity levels—or jump right into varsity competition, Deerfield coaches will work hard to support your development as a player, competitor, and teammate.
On the varsity level, we play in the NEPSAC “A” League, which is highly competitive, and a good platform for exposure to college coaches and scouts. Most teams in our league will have multiple college-bound players on their squads. We currently have several alumni on the rosters of NCAA Division I and Division III programs. We have recently had a player nominated for the McDonald’s All-American team. Another former player earned NESCAC defensive player of the year honors as a starter for Amherst during the 2011-2012 season. Typically, some of our strongest players are multiple-sport athletes who have gone on to great collegiate careers in other sports such as football, lacrosse, and baseball. The varsity squad in any given year will include players who have moved up through the ranks of our program as well as two to four postgraduates.
The basketball team works hard to come together as a team both on and off the court. We pride ourselves on our collective effort at the defensive end, while focusing on the fundamentals of smart, unselfish offensive play. Our team motto is “Hard, Smart, Together,” ideals we have successfully used to earn a reputation as a gritty, resilient squad willing to go toe-to-toe with any teams in New England. We expect the highest standard of sportsmanship from our players and coaches, and promote a spirit of camaraderie and love of the game at every turn. Each season, the whole team attends a couple of local college games at UMass, Amherst College, or Williams College. We often follow up these games with a trip to our favorite local dive, “The Hangar,” for some of the best boneless chicken wings you’ll find anywhere in the world. Once a season, we hold a basketball clinic for kids at the local YMCA–our team has a blast and feels good about spreading enthusiasm for the game of basketball to the local community.
