On a hot afternoon at Deerfield, we went up early on clean up finish from Victor Kibuuka. Initiated at midfield by senior and captain Finn Knight, a nice sequence of passes went down the right wing to senior and captain Cai Harrison who lifted a cross to the far post. Victor was there to capture a deflection and slot it home. Suffield countered with a nice right foot shot from the top of the box by the left wing bringing the ball across to his right foot. Keeper Gianluca Simonelli had a good line on it, but the shot was deflected. The halftime score was 1-1. Early in the second half, a Suffield player was sent off with a red card for bad behavior during a stoppage. Up a man, Deerfield possessed much more and took many shots on goal, yet the Suffield goalie had the answers each time. But then a great touch by freshman Ken Hata and then a through ball from Victor Kibuuka sent senior and captain Andrew Lewis one on one to the goal. Andrew was charging toward the left post, steadied the ball at full speed, nudged it to his right foot, and blasted a head high shot by the near post. Now up a man and a goal, Deerfield shut Suffield down with good possession and strong back line play. It was a great first win for us and we shared the playing time generously. Coaches are proud that our boys maintained good sportsmanship throughout.
