John Chung ’20 Captures 7th Place at New England Championship

At the 2019 New England Independent School Wrestling Association New England Championship tournament, Deerfield’s John Chung ’20 finished on the podium, capturing 7th place at the event in the competitive 120 lb division.

The weekend prior in the Class A Championship, John finished in 4th place, falling to Ian McConnell from Loomis in the semifinal match.

John avenged his previous loss by defeating Loomis’ McConnell in the battle for 7th place at the New England Championship.

In this week’s Athlete of Week nominations, Coach Houston shared,  “John served as one of three captains for varsity wrestling in the 2018-19 season. A consistently intense competitor and an intentional, thoughtful leader, John always set a high bar for the team. As captain, he was the very quintessence of leadership, modeling the commitment and dedication he expected from his peers; as teammate, his composure and enthusiasm inspired younger wrestlers. John’s competitive season was excellent.”

Deerfield’s Hugo Nutting ’22 and Marcus Romboli ’20, both first year wrestlers for the Big Green, also competed at the New England Championship Tournament and finished just shy of the podium.

The future is bright for the Big Green wrestling team as all three of these young competitors will return for the 2019-2020 season.

Congratulations to the wrestling team on a great season!

Go Big Green!
