Tennis: Varsity Boys drops close one to Kingswood

Boys’ tennis enjoyed its home opener on a sunny and warm Wednesday afternoon, a welcome departure from the cold and/or damp conditions of the past week. We welcomed the Kingswood-Oxford Wyverns (Wikipedia: “A wyvern, known as Viverna in Italian, is a legendary creature with a dragon’s head and wings, a reptilian body, two legs, and a tail.”) and coach Andy, a longtime friend of Deerfield, to campus for a midafternoon start. The proximity of the

Full Circle

Greetings! This is my fifth year working for KIPP Houston Public Schools, and I currently serve as the Director of the KIPP Alumni Association. When I came to Deerfield, I was one of 3 KIPPsters on campus, and now KIPPsters from all over the country have followed in our footsteps. Deerfield and KIPP have a great relationship and I am beyond thrilled to share that two of my very own students are attending DA and

Boys Tennis

By BOB YORK — To say the end of an era came to a close this spring for the Deerfield Academy boys tennis program would be an understatement. In reality, two eras came to a close on May 17.  One belonged to Jay Morsman, the program’s long-time mentor. The other belonged to Gil Roddy, one of the premier players in Big Green history. Morsman, who led Deerfield to one national prep school title as well

Boys Crew

By BOB YORK —  “California Dreamin’” would be an appropriate name if the Deerfield Academy boys crew team should decide its current moniker–“Number One Boat”–might be a little too boring. After all, every crew team that’s ever dipped its oars in water has had a “Number One Boat.” Not every school’s flagship has qualified for the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships, though, but Deerfield’s has and this spring’s national regatta will take place in–you guessed

Boys Basketball

By BOB YORK —  Conrad Pitcher has always tried to ramp up the competition for his Deerfield Academy boys basketball team a bit by annually sprinkling a few of New England’s heavy hitters throughout his team’s schedule. They always hit back, Pitcher is well aware of that fact, but the Big Green mentor may be figuring it’s time to start picking on a few more teams its own size. Following a winter’s worth of duking

Girls Cross Country

By Bob York –Given the drama … the suspense … the intrigue … plus three hours to let it all fester, and you have a New England Prep School Athletic Council Cross Country Championship awards ceremony that mirrored a dinner mystery theater. The difference: those in attendance wanted to know who won it, not who done it. “Our race began at 1:30 pm and we were done by 2,” recalled Deerfield Academy girls cross country

Boys Water Polo

By Bob York — Whether you win it or lose it, it’s always a bitter sweet way to end the season. It’s that dreaded consolation game … that battle to capture bronze when you came in quest of gold. It’s that game that simply means you were good enough to make it to the tournament, but not good enough to make it to the finals. Up until this fall, the Big Green seemed to perceive
