Girls Field Hockey

By Bob York — Even though the Big Green’s weapon of choice is a stick, you still have to love its batting average. In 24 years of existence, the Deerfield Academy field hockey program has earned a berth in tournament play following 20 of those seasons for a hefty .833 clip. This fall, the team used one of its best starts in school annals–six wins and a tie –to get a leg up on the

Endowed Funds

As opposed to annual gifts, which cover yearly operating expenses, endowed funds provide long-term income to assist with all of Deerfield’s needs. Because only the income from the principal – not the principal itself – is spent, endowed funds provide money for Deerfield in perpetuity. Endowed funds can be established for a specified purpose, or as unrestricted funds to meet the greatest needs of the school. For more on stewardship and establishing an endowed fund, see

Crew

By BOB YORK The amount of time it takes to get from 4:54.008 to 4:55.622 on your stopwatch is 1.614 seconds. That’s not enough time to say “Lake Quinsigamond,” but yet it proved to be more than enough on the clock to keep Deerfield Academy’s number-one boat from a shot at defending its national championship. The invite to the Youth National Rowing Championships, which are annually held on Melton Hill Lake in Oakridge, Tenn., are

Triple Crown Reunion

By BOB YORK —  The walls of the Deerfield Academy athletic department’s Oval Office are adorned with photos showing the very best Big Green sports has to offer. One features a sprinter on the boys track team, depicting the speed of the sport. Another picture, that of girls crew, exhibits both teamwork and strength, as the rowers are seen powering their boat by pulling their oars through the water in perfect unison. The qualities displayed

Boys Water Polo

By BOB YORK —  There’s one piece of advice that many water polo players should heed above all other instruction: Keep your chin up! This little tip has nothing to do with pulling yourself out of a slump, but rather avoiding a nosedive – straight to the bottom. A mouthful of water can leave you short of breath, your teammates shorthanded and your coach assembling a search party. Obtaining a list of the lifeguard schedule

Football 2012

By BOB YORK– The Deerfield Academy football season could be summed up in a single word: “Ouch!” “In 45 years of coaching, I’ve never been through a season like this one,” said Big Green mentor Mike Silippo. “I can never remember one team being hit by so many injuries … they began during preseason workouts and scrimmages and continued throughout the entire season. Football’s a physical sport and you expect injuries to occur, but what

News from 1959

Since September 2010, Lyn and I have been working with Avenues: The World School. This is a new school (Nursery – Grade 12) with plans to build twenty campuses around the world. The first campus opened this fall in New York. It has been a big and exciting venture. We still live in Sharon (CT) but spend a lot of time in the city. Check out the school at www.avenues.org and stop in if you

Track Roundup

By BOB YORK Jack Shumway’s good-bye gift to Deerfield Academy was a moment in time – 47.9 seconds to be exact. It doesn’t sound like much, because, fortunately for the Big Green, it wasn’t much. It was the Deerfield senior’s clocking in the anchor leg of the 4×400 relay at this spring’s Division I New England Track and Field Championships. And when Shumway snapped the tape to capture that final event of the day, the

Boys and Girls Crew

By BOB YORK It’s called Melton Hill Lake, but to five boys from Deerfield Academy, it will always be their Golden Pond. The lake, which is located in Oakridge, Tenn., annually plays host to the Youth National Rowing Championships and this year, the Big Green’s Number 1 boat churned its way to a national championship in the High School Coxswain and Four competition. “National champions … it sure has a nice ring to it, now

Baseball

By BOB YORK When it comes to the Central New England Baseball League, everyone’s accounted for when it comes to postseason play. The top four teams in the final standings annually shuffle off to Worcester, where the Final Four battle it out for the CNEBL crown in the Blackburn Tournament, which is hosted by Holy Cross. The league’s other three clubs, meanwhile, head out to Wallingford, Conn., where Choate entertains the Walker Invitational Tournament. And
