Cross Country, Girls

Nestled in a bucolic New England setting of mountains, trails, rivers, ilsley_gv-xcountry_fall-2015fields and orchards, the Deerfield campus is the ideal cross country training ground where every day we enjoy Emerson’s “perfect exhilaration”. Nowhere can a runner be more in touch with their inner self and yet be an integral part of a vibrant and welcoming team. Indeed, the Deerfield girls have taken full advantage of the Academy’s location, negotiating hilly trails that stretch for many miles, running distance on shaded dirt roads that traverse rivers with covered bridges, and winning some New England Championships along the way. The team’s motto, borrowed from the Navy SEALS, is “The Only Easy Day was Yesterday”, is balanced by a true sense of community and an always entertaining, collective sense of fun.

The girls’ cross country team at Deerfield embraces a growth mindset, marking their individual and team progress by internal as well as external measures. Because of this, every runner on the team is a valued member of the family with their own personal aspirations, but also the collective goals of the team in mind. The team has ranged from Foot Locker Nationals qualifiers to the girl who never ran a step in cross country before coming to Deerfield, and they are all equally valued, receive personal coaching attention, and share equally in our successes.girls-xcountry_westminster-invitational_team-pic_10-1-16

Apart from an elite, world-class academic institution, Deerfield is also very much a place of community where people care about, support, and challenge one another to be better. We hope you will agree when you first set foot on campus. Please consider joining us here at the Academy. Come run with us, share a story or two as you crisscross the prettiest running country anywhere, share lots of laughs together, sing pop tunes the top of your lungs, and win lots of races!

Any student-athletes interested in running for Deerfield should send an email to Dennis Cullinane, Head Coach of Girls’ Cross Country.
