Girls Tennis is Undefeated in Regular Season

The Deerfield girls varsity tennis team defeated visiting Longmeadow High School on Wednesday, May 15 in their final match of their 2019 regular season schedule. With the win the team improved their season record to 10-0 concluding the regular season undefeated. An incredible accomplishment for the team.

The last NFL team to remain undefeated in the regular season was the New England Patriots in 2007-2008 when, they won all 16 of their regular season games. They were only the fourth team in NFL history to finish the regular season undefeated.

The 2019 girls varsity tennis team and Coach Christian Austin have inked their place in the Deerfield record books; marking the first time since 2008 that the team has posted an undefeated record in the regular season.

The 2008 squad coached by David Dickinson and captained by Georgia Jewett ’08 and Annie Smith ’08 led their team to a perfect 11-0 record which included a first place finish out of twelve teams at the Kent Tournament, also referred to as the Villa de Franca Tournament.

Now the 2019 girls varsity tennis team of Ashley Manning ’19, Catalina Llorente ’19, Tori Waterfall ’19, Sasha Hinckley ’19, Sophie Genender ’20, Camille Glatt ’21, Emma Weech ’21, Daphne Gavros ’22, Devan L’Esperance ’22, and Isha Rao ’22 share the commonality of an undefeated record with the 2008 girls varsity tennis of Allison Griffis ‘08, Sarah Michler ‘08, Annie Smith ‘08, Georgia Jewett, Libby Burrus ‘10, Rose Cornelson ‘09, Caroline Quazzo ‘08, Lilly Havens ‘10, Hilary Hoyt ‘09, Bea Crawford, and Sangita Murali ‘08.

With their perfect record, the girls varsity tennis team earned the #1 seed entering the post-season championship tournament. The team will return to action this Saturday, May 18 to host #8 Sacred Heart in the Class A Girls Tennis Quarterfinal hosted by Deerfield.

Additionally, Deerfield will be the host site for the quarterfinal match between #4 Nobles vs. #5 Hotchkiss in the other quarterfinal matchup. Meanwhile, #2 Andover will face #7 Groton and #3 Exeter plays #6 Greenwich in their quarterfinal games, which will both be played at Andover.

The quarterfinal winners will advance to the semifinal match to be played on Saturday, May 18 at 3:15pm.

The championship match will be hosted by Westminster School on Sunday, May 19 at 10:00am.

Congratulations to the girls varsity tennis on this achievement and good luck in the post-season!

Go Big Green!
