Congratulations to our Athletes of the Week!
JV Golf: Jarod Harrington ’20 & Axel Mattson ’21
Junior Jarod Harrington led the Big Green to victory over Cushing last week, 221-228. Jarod shot a 38, a career best score. The match was the team’s first held on the Crumpin’ Fox’s challenging back nine, making Jarod’s accomplishment all the more impressive.
Axel Mattson ’21 led the way for the Big Green in their win over Loomis at the beautiful Wintonbury Hills Golf Course. Axel was the medalist of the day, shooting a 38.
Boys JV Tennis: Alexander Grosse ’22
The Boys JV Tennis athlete of the week is Alexander Grosse ‘22. Alexander is one of the first players on the court for practice each day, and one of the last to leave. He has won multiple challenge matches to climb up the ladder to a higher position, constantly striving to prove himself and play better tennis. Eager to play singles tennis, he has shown himself to be a strong doubles player, vastly improving his net game throughout the season, and playing particularly well with George Darling (who was already recognized as a player of the week earlier this season). Alexander won both of his doubles matches this past week, one at 8-0 against Bement and the other an 8-7 duel against a strong Eaglebrook opponent. Great job this season!
Boys Track & Field: Teddy McCarthy ’20
Teddy improved his PR in the pole vault by a foot and a half to win a very competitive pole vault competition at New Englands on Saturday. His clearance of 13 feet launched him to #3 all-time in Deerfield history and makes him a favorite to win again in 2020!
Girls Track & Field: Jaxon Palmer ’22
Jaxon set a new school record in the javelin with a throw of over 105 feet, earning 3rd place at New Englands. She also ran the first leg on the girls’ 4×100, a team that ran their best time of the season at the championship meet.
Girls Varsity Lacrosse: Maggie Tydings ’20
Maggie Tydings is our final Athlete of the week. Maggie had her best game of the season against Exeter and was a pivotal contributor to the team’s success during that final contest. Many of her saves in net occurred in the 2nd half and provided important momentum and scoring opportunities for our offensive unit.
Varsity Baseball: Levi Constant ’19
Levi went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI in a 6-10 loss against Avon. Levi tied the most hits any Deerfield player has had in a single game this season. Throughout the season, Levi has also been one of the team’s best fielders, playing both Left and Center field during the year.
Girls JV Lacrosse: Caroline Carpenter ’19 & Emily Henderson ’19
Girls JV Lax honors Caroline Carpenter ’19 and Emily Henderson ’19 for our athletes of the week. Both Caroline and Emily brought fierce competition to our team this season. On defense and in the midfield we could count on them to fight for ground balls, run hard, and keep their teammates focused. Thank you, Caroline and Emily, for keeping spirits up on the field, on the sidelines, and in practice. Thank you for bringing the team together!
Girls Rowing: Kikka Giudici ’20
Kikka comes to the boathouse with an fantastic attitude every day. She gives 110% each practice both on the erg and on the water. Additionally, she put countless hours in at the gym this fall and winter, which shows her dedication to our team. Totally selfless, Kikka volunteers to help around the boathouse, and leads by example. Even though she gives her all on the water, Kikka never fails to share her fun spirit around the boathouse. She radiates positivity, and is a joy to have on DAGVC. Rock on, Kikka!
Ultimate: Gerry Alexandre ’19
In his senior season, Gerry emerged as a force on both sides of the disc. On offense, Gerry was a trusted handler and dynamic cutter, while playing a central role in breaking zone defenses in the handler set. Gerry’s defense improved significantly and proved to be the difference in games against Northampton Varsity and Choate Varsity. In both of those games and more at the Amherst Invite and NEPSULs, Gerry anchored our zone D in the deep space. At NEPSULs, Gerry registered a team-leading 12 Ds, raising his team-leading total to 39 for the season. What a great season, Gerry! We’re all excited to follow your play at Amherst College next year.
Girls Varsity Tennis: Sophia Genender ’20
Sophia ended the 2019 season with an undefeated singles record. She came back from deficits on two occasions to save the team from losing the overall match. Her steady and powerful play is one of the things that helped us build an undefeated season. We couldn’t have done it without you, Sophia!
Boys JV Lacrosse: Elliot Flagg ’20
Elliot Flagg earned the boys JV lacrosse team’s final AOTW for his outstanding performances against Salisbury and Exeter that led to two impressive team victories. Elliot caused double digit turnovers in the final contests and made big plays that contributed to only allowing 3 goals in each of the final contests. His effort, energy and passion for the game were contagious this season for the Big Green. Thank you, Elliot!
