Yesterday, the Deerfield girls varsity alpine ski team won the 2019 Class A New England Prep School Athletic Council championship at Mt. Sunapee in Sunapee, NH.

The Big Green won with 29 points; scoring 10 points on the slalom and 19 on giant slalom. St. Paul’s finished in second place with 33 points.

The Deerfield boys captured the silver medal at the championships; posting a final team score of 56 (25 slalom, 31 giant slalom).

Kikka Guidici ’20 paced the Big Green girls team; winning the slalom with a combined time of 55.62 and finishing in second in the giant slalom with a combined time of 78.41. Two more Big Green teammates, Valerie Hetherington ’19 and Maddie McCarthy ’19 finished in the top-10 in the slalom. Valerie finished in third place with a combined time of 59.81 and Maddie was sixth with a combined time of 60.96.

In the giant slalom, the girls team continued to score well, with three skiers joining Kikka in the top-10; Valerie was 8th (82.85), Maddie was 9th (83.20) and Chloe Monty ’20 was 10th (83.60).

Tait Kline led the Deerfield boys, he was sixth on both the slalom (57.92) and giant slalom (76.55). In the slalom, teammate Achille Sarachek ’21 finished 7th (57.98), JP Patton ’19 was 12th (58.78) and Garrett Alexander ’19 was 13th (59.18).

In the giant slalom, Achille finished in 9th (77.12) and Garrett finished in 16th (78.96).

It was an exciting day of racing for the Big Green, after the morning’s Giant Slalom races, both Deerfield teams found themselves in second place heading into the final slalom event. In the slalom, the girls rallied from a three-point deficit to overcome St. Paul’s for the title and the boys put forth their best performance to finish first in the slalom event, ultimately, they came up only a few points shy of the victory.

After finishing tenth last year, the boys returned to the podium in 2019 and the girls once again claimed the NEPSAC Championship, last winning the title in 2012. In past 17 years the boys have 14 podium finishes including 6 championships while the girls have 8 podium finishes and 5 championships.
