1. Review Resources to Make an Informed Decision

As you and your family consider your enrollment, please consult the following resources:

  • Review updated itinerary: Visit the Tanzania Travel Program page
  • Tanzania 2024 Travel Medicine Advisory Letter from Dr. Benson, Medical Director of Deerfield Academy
  • CDC  and State Department briefings on travel to Tanzania (A PDF of the CDC page from November 16 can be downloaded here if you would prefer)
  • Information about International SOS (ISOS), our travel medicine and security services provider
    • If you would like to speak with a medical or security professional at ISOS about the trip, please contact the CSGC.
  • Program Notes:
    • Pre-trip programming will begin for this trip on Saturday, March 2 at noon, for no additional cost students will be able to stay in their dorm and day students will be invited to stay on campus should they choose, all meals will be provided and students will participate in trip prep and framing activities. If the student has a compelling reason to be off campus during this time for example post season tournaments or family events, please contact the CSGC to make arrangements for completing pre trip activities at an alternate time and coordinating the time you will rejoin the group for a smooth departure.
    • A visa is required to travel to Tanzania. The CSGC will facilitate this process and will reach out before the December break with the specific paperwork required to obtain your students visa.
    • Students and faculty trip leaders will be housed in a rustic dormitory called the Guesthouse, with separate bunk rooms for faculty and for girls and boys. The majority of meals, consisting primarily of locally-grown vegetables, beans, and rice will be shared with the girls who live at Mainsprings. Other meals will be eaten at the open-air restaurant, Papa’s, located on the south shore of Lake Victoria. Breakfast will be served continental style. On Safari, students will stay in a safari lodge or furnished tent.
    • This is an “unplugged” trip where students will not have access to cell phones or internet for the duration of their time in Tanzania. Faculty leaders do have cell phones and access to WiFi. Students and faculty leaders will update families and friends at home through our Notes From The Field blog.
    • Families are responsible for transportation from U.S. based airport to the student’s destination for the remainder of March break.
    • This trip conflicts with the March 9 SAT test date.
