Spain #10: Bonding Time

Emily ’25, reflects on a fun day spent with family and friends. In an effort to continue a fully immersive language experience, this blog post is written in both Spanish and English.

Today started much later than the usual day. Around 10:00 am I woke up after the tiring trip in Sevilla, grateful for the breeze provided by the ocean here compared to the relentless heat from the weekend. Today was designated for some much needed rest and spending time with our families. Though everyone’s day looked different, Elena and I got the opportunity to spend time with both our host mom and her son, and several of their friends.

The gathering we went to was considered a santa celebration. As our host mom, Olga, explained to us, when someone is designated as a saint, they have a day dedicated to them. For anyone who shares the name with that saint, they celebrate that day like one would celebrate a birthday. The party we went to was a smaller gathering, around 15 people, and half were young children who enjoyed the relief of the pool in the heat. The party was in a neighborhood about 40 minutes outside of Cádiz. It was similar to what an American children’s pool party would be like. Pizza and nachos were served, which we remarked was very unexpectedly American. Elena and I had fun spending most of our time playing with the two German Shepherds the family had.

All the students dedicated most of their time to their family. It was a great opportunity to bond with our host parents and advance our relationships with them.
