Class of ’25 – You’re Up! – Laptop Encryption

As external attacks on Deerfield’s network and systems increase in frequency and sophistication, ITS is working to strengthen our defenses and become more proactive in responding to these threats. We will deploy many security measures “behind the scenes” that are invisible to users. Some changes will be more visible, and others will require your cooperation and participation.

On Thursday, April 25th, ITS will continue the rollout of hard drive encryption on students’ Mac laptops. Encryption is a method by which data is internally scrambled and essentially becomes useless without a secret key. If your computer is lost, stolen, or compromised, the data it holds will not be accessible to anyone else. Encryption was deployed on faculty machines last month and will be rolled out to students by class. Up tomorrow is the Class of ’25! Please look for an email from ITS, and follow the simple steps that are outlined to ensure that the encryption process is completed fully.

We thank you for carefully reading the information, following the simple instructions, and partnering with ITS to ensure the safety and security of our campus technology resources.
