The varsity golf team is off to the races this season; they have already notched six wins in as many outings to maintain an undefeated record. To date, the Big Green wins have primarily come on the road as they faced Avon, NMH, Exeter, Williston, and Wilbraham in away matches. On Saturday, the team enjoyed their first home match of the season on Spring Family Weekend against opposing Taft. As the team approaches the midway point in their season, 191 is the best stroke play team score posted by the squad this season and 7.5 is the highest match play format score recorded by the Big Green.
To open the season, the Big Green matched up against Avon and NMH at the Feeding Hills Country Club. The veteran group scored a collective 191, which was eight strokes ahead of Avon (199) and 24 strokes ahead of host school NMH (215). Senior captain Lowell Weil lead the way for the Big Green shooting a 34 on the day. He was closely followed by teammates Kimberly Stafford ’19 at 38 strokes, Ben Hirsch ’18 (42), Garrett Moe ’19 (41) and James Whiteley ‘20 (36) and Matt Brosseau ’19 (46).
The Big Green traveled to Exeter, NH for their first match play contest of the season and prevailed over the Big Red 7.5-2.5 to extend their winning ways to three matches.
Last Wednesday, the Big Green returned to stroke-play format against Wilbraham and Williston at the Veterans Memorial Golf Course in Springfield, MA and earned two wins on the day by matching their season-best score of 191. Kimberly Stafford was the day’s medalist scoring a 35 at the number two position. Lowell Weil scored a 39, Ben Hirsch had his best outing of the season at 37, Garret Moe scored a 43, James Whiteley shot a 39 and Matt Brosseau posted his season-best outing at 41 strokes. Williston scored 196 and Wilbraham’s final team score was 213.
Finally, the Big Green returned to their home course at Crumpin Fox for Spring Family Weekend to face Taft in their first home match of the season. The Big Green defeated the Rhinos 6-3 for the first time in four years (2014 – Win 196-216). With Saturday’s win, the team improved their season record to 6-0.
This afternoon, the squad will face Berkshire and Hotchkiss at the Ranch Golf Club. Today’s contest will conclude the first half of the team’s 2018 schedule and, the squad will kick-off the final half of their contests this Saturday when they travel to Newport, RI for the annual Newport Invitational.
