Football Seals Road Victory Early over Hotchkiss

On Saturday, the varsity football team scored twice in the opening quarter and held on to pull out a 13-7 victory over Hotchkiss in their first road game of the 2018 season.

Deerfield’s Donnie Gray ‘21 returned the opening kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown to get the Big Green on the board early.  On the first defensive play of the game, linebacker Reece Lagerquist ‘19 forced a fumble, which was recovered by safety Luke Terry ‘20.  On the ensuing drive, the Bearcats stopped the Big Green’s offensive drive, but shortly thereafter quarterback Cortland Dicks ’21 found wide receiver Quinton Quirrenbach ’19 on an out-route for a six-yard touchdown pass to put the Big Green ahead 13-0 in the first quarter.

Deerfield’s first quarter scoring was enough on the day.  The Big Green defense held strong all game, only conceding a 45 yard touchdown pass on third and 15 midway through the second quarter.  Hotchkiss attempted a 40 yard field goal before the end of the first half which missed wide right.  Linebacker Bayard DeMallie ’19 made an interception on the Deerfield 30 yard line with one minute left in the game to seal the victory.

With the win, the Big Green improved their season record to 2-1.  The team returns home this Saturday, October 6th to battle Worcester Academy at 3:30pm.  If you can’t make it to campus this Saturday, tune in to watch the game on livestream.
