Deerfield Winter Teams Enjoy Success on Opening Saturday

On Saturday, December 1st, Deerfield teams welcomed the month of December and opened their respective 2018-2019 winter seasons! The Big Green enjoyed success by collectively posting a 10-1 record to kick-off their new seasons!

Girls varsity basketball tipped off the day by hosting Canada Top Flight Academy in their final preseason scrimmage. The Big Green defeated the visitors, 45-34, and will look to carry this momentum into their season opener tomorrow, 12/5 at neighboring NMH. This year’s squad features eight returning players and welcomes six new faces to the fold.

The boys varsity basketball team opened their season on their home court against visiting Kimball Union Academy. The two teams battled back-and-forth throughout the first half and the Big Green pulled within eight points of KUA in the second half, but ultimately fell to the visitors, 62-76. The Big Green will look to rebound tomorrow when they travel to Loomis for a 3:30pm tip off.

Girls varsity and JV squash traveled to Lakeville, CT to face-off against Hotchkiss in their opening matches of the season. Girls varsity squash was victorious over the Bearcats 6-1 and the JV team followed with another convincing win, 5-2. The girls will continue their match play on the road tomorrow, 12/5 when they visit ISL school, Milton Academy.

The boys varsity and JV squash teams welcomed Hotchkiss to the Pioneer Valley for their season opener. The boys varsity team fell behind, 0-2 after the opening two matches, but rallied to close out the Bearcats for their first win, 5-2. The boys JV squad was also victorious, defeating the Bearcats 7-2 which included several exhibition matches. The boys varsity team will enjoy an off Wednesday, before traveling to Greenwich, CT this Saturday for a double header against Brunswick and Avon at 3:00pm.

The girls varsity hockey team went into overtime to earn their first win of the 2018-19 season. The team rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Lions of St. Mark’s on their home ice. The team will return to Deerfield tomorrow, 12/5 for their first game in their new home rink against Loomis Chaffee at 3:00pm.

Girls JV basketball traveled up the hill to NHM for their first game/scrimmage of the season. After trailing for most of the game, the team tied the game in the final minutes of play and sunk the final bucket to go-ahead by two-points to secure the victory, 36-34. The team will travel alongside the varsity team this Saturday, 12/8 for their first game at St. Paul’s.

In the pool, the boys and girls varsity swimming and diving teams swept visiting Milton Academy in their season opening meet. The boys secured the victory by a score of 96-66 and the girls earned their first under new head coach Megan Washburn, 100-75. Both squads will return to the pool this Saturday, 12/8 when they host Minnechaug.

The boys varsity hockey team closed out the opening day of games by defeating Groton 5-0 on the road for their first win of the season. Five different players netted goals to secure the shutout victory. The team will return home tomorrow, 12/5 to open their home slate of games against NMH at 5:00pm.
