It was a big weekend for the boys varsity basketball team as they defeated Westminster and Commonwealth Academy on the road for the two-game sweep! On Saturday, the Big Green defeated the Westminster Martlets 73-55 and earned another victory on Sunday at the Pioneer Valley Tip Off against Commonwealth Academy, 77-74.
The win at Westminster, was Deerfield’s first win of their young season. The Big Green jumped out to a double digit lead early in the first half and never let the Marlets within single digits the rest of the game. The Big Green set the tone with stifling defense and dominant rebounding. In the game, Jackson Selvala ’19 displayed his all-court game, scoring 20 points on a combination of three-pointers and slashing finishes at the rim. He also grabbed 7 rebounds. Jackson Pitcher ’19 put his intensity and athleticism to work, while filling the stat sheet with 13 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and a block. Jackson McCarty ’19 epitomized the team’s energetic and gritty effort, scoring 7 points on perfect shooting from the field and taking a big charge at a pivotal moment in the second half.
On Sunday, playing in the Pioneer Valley Tip-Off at the Curry Hicks Cage on the University of Massachusetts campus, Deerfield notched a signature win against traditional basketball power Springfield Commonwealth Academy. Named player of the game by the tournament organizers, Jade Tse ‘19 put on a dazzling display of shooting and dribbling, scoring 30 points, including a 75-foot buzzer beater at the end of the first half. Bennett Pitcher ’21 chalked up a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Jackson Pitcher outworked the opposition for 14 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Nolan Zusi ’19 came off of the bench to score 4 pivotal points, while stepping in to take a charge near the end of the game, helping to seal the victory.
The Big Green will look to carry their momentum and energy into their final regular season game of 2018 today against visiting Pomfret at 3:30pm. Tune in to watch today’s game on livestream.
