Summer CSGC Grant Update: Educating children about pollinators and sustainability

Georgia ’25 and Chas ’25 spend the time teaching children battling pediatric cancer about pollinators, endangered species and sustainability.

Chas and I had the unique pleasure of spending time with 4-12 year old children with the Rally Foundation this summer. The Rally Foundation is a non for profit organization that helps families with children battling pediatric cancer.

After the first day – a complete success – Chas and I were excited to have another fun time with these kids. We brought them to the Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell, GA to teach them about environmental sustainability in Atlanta. Before we could do any of that, though, we HAD to take our kids to the butterfly exhibit.

In the butterfly exhibit, we taught the kids about pollinators, migration, and endangered species. Surrounded by hundreds of butterflies, the kids laughed, played, and acted as landing strips for the beautiful butterflies. We also brought arts and crafts to teach them about the bilateral symmetry which butterflies exhibit.

Later during the day, we took a nature walk over the Chattahoochee River. We found a nice shady spot to sit and used Model Magic clay to create sculptures of things corresponding to climate change. One of our kids, Ethan, made a “torrential downpour” after Chas explained how climate change affects the frequency and intensity of rain.

We loved our time with these kids, and can’t wait to work with them again next year!
