In the autumn of 1966, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale started the Black Panther Party for Self Defense, an organization that has been misunderstood and maligned by politicians and the popular media since its very inception. Watch this 3-minute video recorded last February to learn more about my (Erin Hutchinson) family’s connection to the Party, and apply for American South: Activism & Leadership Through the Lens of the American Civil Rights Movement, one of the CSGC’s March break trips, to learn more about this and other elements of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s, considering how the lessons of the past can inform how we can engender change in our communities today. Applications are due December 6.
