On this day in 1979, Rosa Parks was awarded the Spingarn Medal, the NAACP’s highest honor, in recognition of her contributions to the American Civil Rights Movement, particularly her refusal to surrender her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama city bus to a white male passenger on December 1, 1955. Her act of defiance served as a catalyst for the Montgomery Bus Boycott which persisted until December 21, 1956 when Montgomery’s city busses were finally integrated.
