Part-time History & Social Science Teacher

Deerfield Academy, a private coeducational boarding school founded in 1797 and annually serving approximately 650 students grades 9-12, seeks a Part-Time History and Social Science Teacher with a start date in early September 2024 and an end date in early March 2025. The teaching responsibility will be between two and four sections of a core course or courses, likely in World or European History. Unlike most full-time teaching roles at Deerfield, this position does not require any responsibilities beyond classroom teaching (residential life, co-curricular programs, advising, etc.). Because this is a leave replacement position, it is unlikely there will be an opportunity for continued employment beyond early March 2025.

We are looking for candidates who exhibit excellence in the classroom and who can help develop in students the fundamental learning objectives traits outlined in The Deerfield Student: leadership and judgment, open-mindedness and curiosity, mastery and metacognition, and scholarship. We believe diversity and inclusion are essential elements of a thriving educational community and actively seek candidates who are members of and/or exhibit the skills needed to support traditionally underrepresented groups, especially in terms of race, sexual orientation, and educational background.

Additionally, candidates for this position will possess the following specific attributes/qualifications:

  • Experience teaching across our spectrum of History and Social Science courses in some setting; versatility and openness to teaching assignments is key.
  • Success running discussion-centered classes or facilitating inquiry-driven discussions
  • Strong writing skills and enthusiasm for teaching analytical writing
  • A master’s degree (preferred)
  • Interest in and demonstrated skill working with adolescents
  • Demonstrated multicultural competency and commitment to inclusivity
  • The ability to work with colleagues as part of a team
  • A sense of humor
