On Saturday, varsity volleyball hosted St. Paul’s and the Big Green emerged with a 3-0 victory over the Big Red to extend their current winning season to seven straight wins.
Deerfield got off to a strong start with good passing from Zoe Gavros ‘23 and Elle Stearns ‘23 allowing the Big Green setters to involve multiple hitters and keep the St. Paul’s blockers guessing. Cate Shanahan ‘23 had another strong match on the outside while Georgia Sackrey ‘23 and Harmoni Dobbins ‘26 provided blocks and well-timed hits in the middle. A long service run from Shanahan broke open the first set to take it from 5-3 to 15-3 and Deerfield continued that momentum to take the first set, 25-11.
Natalie Meyer ‘23 and Evelyn Kunde ‘26 both had great days on the right side and the decision-making and setting of Wuyee Ke ‘26 and Greta Trapp ‘25 were excellent throughout the match.
Sackrey and Trapp both had longer service runs in the second set and Carolyn Weller ‘23 provided another attacking option on the outside that allowed Deerfield to win the second set, 25-11.
Loran McGruder ‘24 stepped in on defense and Evie Mokarow ‘24 played outside for a portion of the 3rd set. St. Paul’s continued to fight throughout the match and while Deerfield got out to the early lead, the Big Red pushed Deerfield the whole way with some tough serves, leading to a final set score of 25-21.
The Big Green and St. Paul’s will have a rematch during the last week of the regular season.
With Saturday’s victory the Big Green extend their current season winning streak to seven games. Up next, the Big Green will host a strong NMH team on Wednesday, October 12 at 2:30pm.
