The varsity baseball team swept Exeter in Saturday’s league doubleheader.
In the first game of the series, Deerfield played their 3rd extra inning game of the season and came out with a 6-4 win.
Deerfield had a 4-2 lead heading into the 7th inning, but Exeter was able to score two runs to send the game to extras. In the top of the 8th inning catcher Billy Mrowka ‘22 hit a two run home run to put Deerfield up 6-4 and pitcher Ryan McHugh ’23 was able to pitch a scoreless bottom half to secure the win.
Tynan Creagh ’22 was 3-4 and Sam Chutkow ’22 had two RBIs. SP Kiernan Keller ’22 pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed just two ER on six hits and struck out five batters.
After a brief break in between games, the Big Green returned to the diamond for game two and completed the doubleheader win over Exeter by a score of 4-2.
The pitching combination of Ryan McHugh, Sam Chutkow and Gavin Rigney ’24 held Exeter to just five hits. Exeter scored three runs in the 7th inning but was unable to tie the game after a relay from left field to 2nd base got the game clinching 3rd out.
Gavin Rigney and Sam Chutkow each had 2 RBI on 2 out hits in the 4th and 5th innings respectively. Geoffrey Jamiel ’22 was 2-3 and scored a run and Ryan McHugh was 2-4 and scored 2 runs.
Saturday’s doubleheader sweep extended the Big Green’s current winning streak to four games with previous wins coming against Dexter-Southfield on April 23 (8-5) and Choate on April 27 (11-3).
With six regular season games remaining on the team’s schedule, the Big Green improve their record to 7-5.
Up next, the Big Green will travel to Cushing on May 4th. First pitch is scheduled for 3pm.
