Short-Handed Goals Propel Big Green in Season Opener Road Win

The boys varsity hockey team opened their 2021-2022 campaign with a big road win against neighboring Northfield Mt. Hermon on Wednesday, 3-1.

The Big Green opened the scoring early in the first period when John Bloomer ’22 netted a short-handed goal to give the Doors the early 1-0 lead.

Teammate, Ryan McHugh ‘23 inked his name on the scoresheet shortly thereafter in the first period with another short-handed goal to double the Big Green lead to 2-0.

NMH cut the Big Green lead in half by netting a goal of their own in the first period.

In the second period, Tom Molson ’25 scored to further extend the Big Green’s lead to 3-1.

In goal for the Big Green, John Tolve ‘24 made 32 saves only allowing one goal in the game.

The remainder of the second period and the entire third would remain scoreless for both teams. McHugh’s early first period goal ultimately proved to be the game winner, sealing the team’s first victory of the season.

Up next, the Big Green will travel to rival Choate Rosemary Hall on Saturday, December 11 for a 6pm puck drop against the Wild Boars.
