On Wednesday, 12/5, the girls and boys varsity hockey teams were both undefeated in their debut games in the new Class of 1993 rink.
The girls varsity hockey team opened the back-to-back Wednesday game schedule against a strong Loomis squad. This was the team’s first game in the new rink, and emotions were running high as the squad aimed to start this new era of Deerfield Hockey off on the right foot. After a scoreless first period, the Big Green fell behind the Pelicans in the second period, 0-1.
Trailing by only a goal, the Big Green started the third period confident that their hard work would pay off, and, sure enough, Ali Fujiyoshi ’19 found a streaking Christina Halloran ’20, who beat the defense and then faked out the Loomis goalie to give the Big Green the equalizing goal. Christina’s tally will go down in history as the first official Deerfield varsity goal scored in the new barn!
At the end of three periods, the score remained tied 1-1, sending the game into overtime. The Big Green and the Pelicans exchanged opportunities during the five minute OT period. Ultimately, the score remained 1-1 at the final whistle.
With the tie, the Big Green improved their early season record to 1-0-1 and will face off against Nobles tonight at 6:00pm, followed by their second game in as many days at Buckingham, Browne & Nichols on Saturday at 2:00pm.
The boys varsity hockey team took to the ice following the girls game to take on the neighboring NMH Hoggers. The squad found themselves trailing the Hoggers, 2-0 after the first period. Alex Robert ’20 cut the lead in half when he notched a goal in the second period.
At the start of the third period, Matt Miron scored the equalizer for the Big Green. In goal, Thomas Gale ’19 made several big saves to help the Doors kill off four penalties in the third period.
In the final two minutes of regulation, Sasha Shogren ’19 snuck a shot through the pads of NMH goaltender to give the Big Green the go-ahead goal and make their first-ever varsity hockey game in the new Class of 1993 Rink a memorable victory.
The Big Green improved their young season record to 2-0 and have a big weekend ahead facing off against Choate on Saturday at 6:00pm and welcoming Avon to the Class of 1993 Rink on Sunday for a 2pm contest.
It was a memorable night in the new barn!
