On Saturday, in front of a loud and boisterous Deerfield crowd in the Dewey Squash Center, the girls varsity squash team defeated the visiting Noble and Greenough Bulldogs in their first home match of the season, 5-2. With Saturday’s win, the Big Green extended their early season winning streak to three games.
The opening round of play featured Sasha Hinckley at #8, back in the lineup. After a tentative start, Sasha found her groove and won 3-1. At #6, Griffin Dewey charged ahead, dominating the first two games before faltering in the next two; then, with great drive and composure, Griffin prevailed to win the fifth. At #4, Devon L’Esperance also got off to a splendid start, but then her opponent started to anticipate Devon’s short shots and won the next three games. Isabella Rolfe at #2 showed her mental toughness, winning the first two games in overtime, 17-15 and 12-10. Isabella then commanded the third game for a 3-0 win. The second round of play featured the Woodward sisters, Harbour at #3 and Willow at #7, decisively defeating their Bulldog opponents in three games. Sarah Stonestreet at #5 played an exciting back and forth match against one of the Nobles’ captains, but unfortunately lost in the fifth game. And after losing the first game, #1 Ashley Manning harnessed the fan frenzy and took control of the T to turn her match around, ultimately winning 3-1.
The Big Green will look to improve their winning streak to four games, when they continue their two-game home stand and closeout their 2018 schedule this Wednesday vs. Groton at 3:30pm.
