The Deerfield girls varsity basketball team traveled to Exeter on Saturday, 2/19 to compete in the Annual Eight Schools Girls Basketball Tournament. This year’s event was modified to a one-day event with two brackets at two different sites – Exeter and NMH – and participating schools included Andover, Choate, Exeter, Hotchkiss, NMH, St. Paul’s, and Milton.
The Big Green defeated Milton 57-42 in their opening tournament game on Saturday. Kate Kelly ’22, Savannah Gibbs ’22, and Avery Burns ‘22 led the scoring for the Big Green by registering 14, 13 and 12 points respectively. Georgia Sackrey ‘23 dominated the paint with 14 rebounds .
The team returned to action later in the afternoon against host school, Exeter. In their morning tournament game, Exeter defeated St. Paul’s, 48-28. The Big Green went on to defeat the Big Red of Exeter 51-46 in overtime to secure their second win of the tournament and claim the top spot in their bracket of the tournament.
Avery Burns ’22 netted 25 points in the victory to lead the Big Green scoring. Aoife Bruce ’22, Georgia Sackrey and Savannah Gibbs ’22 netted eight, seven and six points respectively in the win. This game it was Kate Kelly and Savannah Gibbs along with Aoife Bruce who were dominant with offensive and defensive rebounds for the Big Green.
With the two victories, the Big Green improve their season record to 8-7. They will complete their regular season schedule this week with two home games. This Wednesday, February 23 the team will tip off against Westminster at 3:00pm and on Friday night the Big Green will host rival Choate Rosemary Hall at 7:30pm.
