Girls Hockey Defeats the Boars to Remain Undefeated in 2019

Yesterday in Wallingford, CT, the girls varsity hockey team jumped ahead to an early three-goal lead over rival Choate Rosemary Hall in the first period. The early lead was enough for the Big Green to seal the 4-1 victory over the Boars and keep their undefeated 2019 record intact.

In the opening period, Lisa Ito-Bagshaw ‘21 found some open space in front of the net, and buried a pass from Ellia Chiang ‘21 (Deirdre Mullowney ‘19 earned the second assist) to open the scoring. Then, on the power play, Chiang and Ito-Bagshaw connected and found an open Caroline Skillman ‘19, who made no mistake in scoring the second goal of the game. Finally, Chiang got a goal of her own, finishing off a nice play by Kailen Coelho ‘20.

The three-goal lead stood until late in the game, when Choate found the back of the net to make things interesting. However, Jordan Manning ‘19 shut the door the rest of the way (19 total saves), and Mullowney iced the game with an empty net goal on the penalty kill. Aurora Devereaux ‘20 earned the hard hat (with an honorable mention to her D-partner Sara Ito-Bagshaw ‘22) for her excellent work along the boards and strong puck movement on the break out.

Chiang and Mullowney both rebounded from some tough hits along the boards to play excellent games, and Christina Halloran ‘20 was a force of nature all over the ice.

With the win, the team improves their season record to 8-4-2 and extends their 2019 winning ways. The Big Green closed out 2018 with a 1-0 win over Cushing in the Championship game of the Watkins Tournament. They carried this momentum into 2019 and have bolstered a five-game undefeated streak, which includes wins over Hill, Lawrenceville, NMH and Choate and a tie vs. Exeter.

Yesterday’s win kicks-off a week of three-games for the Big Green. Next up, the Doors travel to New Hampshire to face-off against New Hampton on Friday night and they will complete the week at home on Saturday against Taft. Tune in to watch Saturday’s game on livestream.
