Game on! Deerfield teams return to play this weekend against outside competition after almost a year-long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under new, Healthy Deerfield protocols Big Green teams are excited to return to interscholastic action against local schools.
“We have had a good winter here health-wise and now as we end the winter term I am pleased to see the school advance and allow for these interscholastic competitions. We started early in January with the ski program operating under strict guidelines and that has gone very well. Now, with the help of the athletic strategic team taskforce members, our health team and the environmental consultants EH&E we have developed protocols that allow for interscholastic play. This is an exciting next step, particularly as we look forward to athletics this spring.” – Bob Howe, Athletic Director
The girls varsity basketball team will tip-off the winter game schedule this Friday, February 26 against neighboring Wilbraham and Monson at 7:00 pm in the Class of 1953 Gymnasium, while the boys varsity basketball team will travel down I-91 to Wilbraham and Monson to take on their basketball team at 7:00 pm.
On Saturday, February 27, the Big Green varsity hockey teams will face-off against the Northfield Mount Hermon Hoggers. The girls varsity hockey team will compete at home at 1:00 pm and the boys varsity hockey team will begin their season on the road with a 1:00 pm puck drop.
In the second week of games, the Big Green will share a home-and-away series on Friday and Saturday with the Berkshire School. On Friday, March 5, girls varsity hockey, boys varsity basketball and girls varsity squash will compete at home against the Bears at 6:00pm. Simultaneously, boys varsity hockey, girls varsity basketball and boys varsity squash will travel to Sheffield, MA for their respective contests against the Bears at 6:00pm. On Saturday, March 6, the road teams from Friday night will return home for 1:00 pm contests and the home teams will travel to Berkshire for 1:00 pm games.
On Wednesday, March 3rd, the boys and girls varsity swimming and diving teams will compete in home meets, the boys will compete in a historical virtual meet going head-to-head against the results from a previous meet opponent. The girls varsity swimming and diving team will also compete on march 3 in a home “Green & White” meet.
Next week, the varsity alpine ski team will close out their season with their fourth and final race of 2021 at Berkshire East.
In the final weekend of interscholastic contests for the winter term, the Big Green boys and girls varsity hockey and girls varsity basketball teams will compete against Cushing Academy. On Friday, March 12, girls varsity basketball will host the Penguins for a 5:00pm tip-off and the boys varsity hockey team will face-off against the Penguins in the Class of 1993 Rink, puck drops at 6:00pm. The girls varsity hockey team will travel to Cushing on Friday night for a 6pm contest and then return home to face off again vs. the Penguins on home ice on Saturday at 1:00pm. In the final game of the winter season, the boys varsity hockey team will face the Penguins on the road in Ashburnham, MA on Saturday, March 13 at 1:00 pm.
