Football Stuns Cheshire in the First Quarter to Seal Victory

Deerfield saved their best performance to date for their final home game of the season, beating a talented Cheshire Academy team 34-14.

Quinton Quirrenbach ‘19 returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown.  The return touchdown was Quinton’s second return touchdown of the season and Deerfield’s third of the season.

On the ensuing kickoff, kicker Jack Bill ‘19 snuck an onside kick down the home sideline and it was recovered by safety Luke Terry ‘20.  Deerfield drove down to the 5 yard line but was unable to score.  Cheshire got the ball back near their end zone and on third down defensive end Francis Dooley ’19 caused a fumble at the 1 yard line which was recovered by linebacker Bayard DeMallie ‘19.  Quarterback Jack Bill scored from 1 yard out on the next play to put Deerfield ahead 14-0 in the first quarter.

Deerfield took a 21-7 lead into the half and maintained the lead the rest of the game.  Jack Bill and running back Griffin Schutz ‘21 both scored twice in the game and the Deerfield defense limited Cheshire to only one score in the second half.

With Saturday’s win, the Big Green improve their season record to 6-2. Deerfield finishes the season against undefeated Choate at 1:15 on Saturday in Wallingford.
