Girls Varsity Basketball: Nancy Ferguson ‘24 and Sophie Kamil ‘26
Before the break, Nancy stood out in our holiday tournament, being a high-scorer in the three games. Her tenacious defense, basketball IQ, and unwavering effort carried the team. As a captain, Nancy’s vocal leadership is always present, even during the hardest moments. She is a mentor and a friend to everyone.
Our Door of the Week is Sophie Kamil ‘26. Sophie has stepped up in a big way for GVBB, showing her potential as a post player. She consistently puts in great effort and is eager to learn. In our loss to Taft, she contributed 4 points and double digit rebounds.
Boys JV Hockey: Jarron Crosbie ’26
This week the boys JV hockey team would like to recognize Jarron Crosbie for his efforts as a goalie with the team. Shortly before the Holiday break Jarron let his coaches know of his willingness to be the second team goalie. This position shift gives the team a big boost at practices and we all appreciate Jarron for his willingness to help the team in this way. This weekend he gets the start against NMH and Andover!!
Boys Varsity Squash: Kyle Yang ‘26 and Read Kitchel ‘26
This Saturday Kyle Yang played his best squash of the season, going 6 straight sets over both opponents from Belmont Hill and Exeter. In addition to playing up 2 spots on the ladder from his usual position, he faced a higher rated opponent in the first match, and recovered from a racket to the face in the opening of the second match. He won with tenacity and focus, and we’re very proud – Go Kyle!
This Saturday Read Kitchel won both his matches while playing up two ladder positions against Belmont Hill and Exeter. In the process Read clawed his way out of the jaws of defeat via a 0-2 game deficit, then outpaced and outclassed his Exeter opponent in straight sets. He won with determination and with class – Go Read!
JV Swimming: Edie Huffard ’25
This week, JV Swim would like to nominate Edie Huffard ’25 for DOTW. Edie swam in her first ever swim meet on Saturday against Suffield, overcoming her first-meet jitters to swim personal best times in both the 100 yard freestyle and the 50 yard backstroke! During her final swim, Edie lost both her cap and her goggles, but still managed to finish the race at pace! We were so impressed with her ability to adjust despite these complications. Edie is also a positive force out of the water, bringing a bright spirit, positive attitude, and big smile to every practice! We’re lucky to have her!
Girls Varsity Hockey: Campbell Krotee ’25
Campbell Krotee is the girls hockey Door of the Week for her excellent performance and steadiness in our games against Lawrenceville this weekend. As the only goalie on our team this season, it’s really hard to show up every day and be mentally ready- but Campbell has made it look easy! She has been instrumental in our team’s success this year, and we are really impressed with her strong presence in net- it gives our team confidence in the defensive zone and she has kept us in big games all season long. We’re excited to see where the rest of the season takes us with Campbell at the helm!
Boys JV Squash: Thomas Unkles ’25
Thomas has climbed the B/JV squash ladder by winning challenge matches. Presently at #3, he almost beat the #2 player yesterday. He regularly stays after practice to hit solo. More importantly, Thomas has raised the quality of play of his teammates in drills and in challenges because he is so humble, generous, and focused. He is proving to be a supportive teammate and a fine addition to the JV team this year.
Boys JV Basketball: Will Machnik ’26
Will Machnik has led the JV boys hoops team this winter with his energy, competitive spirit, and skills. He is coachable and hardworking.
Girls Swimming & Diving: Tess Ho ’27
Tess Ho earned the first DAGVSD Door of the Week award of 2024. Her teammates recognized Tess for her positive approach, sense of humor, and contagious energy in practice. As a first year swimmer, Tess impressed her teammates by leading the lane and training without complaint. Her determination in races and her enthusiastic commitment to the team are admirable. She is a welcome addition and we look forward to seeing her continue to improve this season. Congratulations, Tess!
Girls Varsity Squash: Jade Zimmerman ’25
In the months after last season’s Nationals, Jade focused intently on developing her squash game. Her hard work and long hours on court have paid off as she is playing exceptional squash at the #2 position on the varsity squad! Jade arrives at the courts every afternoon ready to push herself and support her friends, she is an exceptional teammate. This past Saturday, Jade faced a talented Exeter opponent and completely controlled the match in her victory but did so humbly and with a smile. Congratulations on a great start to your junior season Jade!
Boys Varsity Swimming & Diving: John Comite ’26 and Edwin Chu ’27
Boys varsity swimming nominates two new swimmers who have made an immediate impact on the team – both in their swimming and bolstering of a strong team culture.
Girls JV Basketball: Giorgia Santore ’24
The Door of the Week for Girls JV Basketball is Giorgia Santore ’24. Giorgia is an invaluable member of our team, both in terms of athletic and leadership skills. As one of our captains, she helps lead warmups each day and brings a dedicated and focused attitude to practice. During water breaks you will often find her continuing to work, practicing free throws or her half-court shot. Giorgia has played beautifully in all our games thus far. Not only is she amazing at driving the ball up the court and retaining control, but she is also a fantastic shot and has contributed to every win. We are excited to see what else Giorgia accomplishes in her final season of Deerfield basketball.
