The Deerfield boys varsity squash and girls varsity squash teams competed at the 2020 Head US High School Team Squash Championship on Friday, February 21 through Sunday, February 23 at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.
In the Justi Cup main draw, which is the top boys draw, the Doors defeated Milton Academy 5-2 in their opening match, advancing to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinal match, the Big Green fell to Kent School 2-5. With several of the games in the matches extending into four and five sets.
The Big Green then faced Avon in the Classic Plate semifinals; losing by a game, 4-3. Then, in the Classic Plate playoff the Big Green defeated Belmont Hill 6-1 to earn a seventh place finish overall in the top flight of the National Championship.
On the girls side, the Big Green competed in the Patterson Cup, the girls top flight draw. In their opening match of the tournament, the girls defeated Millburn High School from New Jersey, 6-1, advancing to the quarterfinal round to face Agnes Irwin.
In the quarterfinals the Big Green were defeated 5-2 by their opponent.
The Big Green quickly rebounded and defeated Andover, 6-1, in the Classic Plate Semis to advance to the Classic Plate Finals vs. Episcopal Academy. In the final match, the Big Green defeated their opponent 4-3 to capture the coveted fifth place national ranking.
On Wednesday following the national championship tournament, the boys and girls varsity squash teams traveled to Choate for their final regular season matches. Both teams defeated the rival Wild Boards, 6-1.
This weekend the boys varsity squash team will return to Choate for the 2020 New England Interscholastic Squash Association Class A Championship. The tournament games will begin on Saturday, February 29 and the championship matches will be played on Sunday, March 1. The girls varsity squash will also be competing in the 2020 New England Interscholastic Squash Association Class A Championship this weekend hosted by Deerfield. The opening tournament matches will begin on Saturday, February 29 at 10:00am and the championship matches are scheduled for Sunday, March 1. Tune in to watch live, here.
