Boys Cross-Country Races to Podium Finish at New England Championship

Boys cross-country raced to an epic third-place podium finish at the 2021 New England Championship.

While the rest of campus prepared for the arrival of the Choate teams, the Deerfield cross country team set out for the rolling hills of Phillips Andover’s five kilometer course for the New England Championship.

At the team’s last championship race, the boys placed twelfth of fifteen teams in the league, so the Deerfield runners set out with the goal of beating that mark. In this year’s iteration of the varsity race, the Big Green harriers edged out all but two competitor schools to take third overall.

Aggressive racing earned three Deerfield harriers positions in the top twenty individuals: Carson Bynum ’23, Max Wang ’25, and Quinn Hampson ’22. Trey Souder ’22 and Robbie Hua ’24 rounded out the scoring five with ferocious kicks that tied up the team points contest with the Hotchkiss Bearcats. Blix Salz ’24 and Chase Cherewatti ’22 both defeated the sixth Bearcat runner and thus broke the tie to claim third place.

The JV race went out at a torrid pace before the bird sanctuary hills, but the Deerfield boys hung tough to finish out the season strong.

Overall, the achievements of the day were a result of the efforts of all the boys who have worked so hard all season long. All the coaches are enormously proud of their achievements, but much more proud of the way that they have built a culture that led to those results. Looking ahead, the Deerfield harriers will eagerly anticipate and prepare for the Brush Invitational 2022.

Congratulations to the boys cross-country runners and coaches an their impressive season!

Go Big Green!
