Big Green Skiers Return to the Slope

The Deerfield ski team returned to competition yesterday February 10th in the first Mt. Institute Ski League race of the 2021 season at Berkshire East; marking the first time since March 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic that Deerfield teams competed against outside competition. The Big Green ski racers made the most of their opportunity, capturing first place finishes in both the boys and girls races.

The Giant Slalom was the first race of the Mt. Institute Ski League season and yesterday’s teams included Northfield Mt. Hermon, Williston Northampton, and Wilbraham & Monson.

The girls team amassed 142 points for the first place finish.

Claire Patton ’22 paced the girls squad, finishing in second place overall with a combine time of 89.46. In her first race donning the green and white, Josephine Cramer ’24 finished in sixth place. She was followed by teammate Lindsay Carey ’23 in seventh place and Liv Del Sarto ‘21 rounded out the Deerfield top-ten finishes with a ninth place finish.

First, second and third place finishes on the boys team guided them to a first place finish with 197 points.

Chip Coffin ’21 led the way for the boys team with a first place finish and a combined time of 82.78. Teammate Tait Kline ’22 was close behind in second place with a combined time of 83.60. Captain Achille Sarachek ’21 finished in third place, only .07 behind Tait. Nick Baker ’21 and Joe Brown ’23 finished in fifth and seventh place respectively to close-out the top-ten finishers in the giant slalom.

The team hopes to return to the slopes for their second race of the season next Wednesday, February 17 at Berkshire East.
