Congratulations to this week’s Athletes of the Week!
Thirds Boys Squash: Alex Smith ’19
In the first match of his career, Alex found himself at the center of attention as the “last man on” against Eaglebrook. Alex did a terrific job maintaining his composure in front of the big crowd, and showed tremendous hustle as he ultimately won the match in five games!
Varsity Wrestling Team: Griffin Thomas, Michael Meng, John Chung, Aiden Day, Connor Finnemore, Imani Goodridge, Duncan Mackay, Will Shuhda, Kishor Bharadwaj, Henry Hayden, Brandon Scott, Brian Shin, Kevin James, Justice Chukwuma, Liam Jeon, Nate Chong, Conrad Freire, Chris Thagard, Mohamed Kadry, Tug Witt, Ben Hirsch, Cameron Thrasher, and Levi Constant
Kudos to all the wrestlers on their stirring victory over Tabor—the first in almost a decade. The team bounced back well from a defeat against a powerful Belmont Hill squad and won the third match of the day by wrestling aggressively and confidently.
Varsity Girls Hockey: Erin DeMarco ‘19
Our athlete of the week is Erin DeMarco. A stalwart on defense, Erin has emerged as a real leader on our team, even as a sophomore. On the ice she is incredibly reliable: against powerhouse opponents Loomis and Nobles last week, Erin made calm, smart decisions with the puck, and worked hard in all three zones until the very last whistle. Furthermore, against Nobles, Erin delivered one of her trademark inspirational speeches to her teammates in between periods, helping to motivate the group to fight back and nearly knock off the defending New England champions. Erin models everything we value in a student-athlete, and we look forward to watching her progress over the course of the season.
JV Girls squash: Carolina Conzelman ’18
Carolina made her debut on our JV squash team this past week. Against Milton on Wednesday, Carolina played great squash in her five-set battle. She picked up her first win of the season at #1 against Loomis, sweeping her opponent and leading our team to a 6-1 victory.
JV Boys Basketball: Nolan Zusi ’19
After leading the team in points in our first game against Loomis, Nolan has continued to provide a strong presence at guard, providing leadership, effort, and skill on both sides of the floor. In our first home game against Suffield Academy this Monday, Nolan had his way with the defense, driving to the paint with aplomb. We look forward to Nolan’s steady hand and head on the floor as we move forward into the 2017 campaign!
JV Girls Basketball: Liz Tarazi ‘19
Liz is our athlete of the week for her outstanding play against Stoneleigh-Burnham on Wednesday. Liz embodied the spirit of Deerfield athletics not only in her determined and dedicated play — she was attentive and gave the greatest effort possible on defense, and generated a great deal of offensive momentum on which she executed time and again — but in her sportsmanlike conduct towards the Stoneleigh players who were just learning the game. This included a moment in which, with the Deerfield score in the 40 or 50 point range and Stoneleigh with one basket, she allowed a player on the opposing team to pass her and take a shot. Liz managed to both give it her all and respect the game while being a good sport, which is truly the Deerfield way. She also maintains her focus and dedication in practices, which her coaches and teammates greatly appreciate. Thank you, Liz! We look forward to a great season with you.
Varsity Girls Basketball: Felicia Renelus ‘17
Our athlete of the week is Felicia Renelus. A two-year captain and three-year varsity player, Felicia has been an exceptional leader for our team both on and off the court. In our first game, when we were being outplayed by NMH, it was Felicia who gave some life to our team through her hard play on the floor. She finished just shy of a double-double with 8 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. On Saturday, she continued to do all of the little things well on both ends of the court in our win against Stoneleigh-Burnham. Felicia reached the double-double mark in this game with an impressive stat line of 15 points, 10 rebounds, 5 steals and 11 deflections. We are excited to have Felicia leading our team this season!
JV Girls Hockey: Annie Ilsley ‘18
Annie Ilsley ’18 is the girls JV hockey player of the week. As a strong center with great stick skills, Annie has played very well offensively so far this season. She stepped up in a big way against Williston this past Saturday by scoring her first hat-trick (three goals) which led us to a 7-3 win against the Bobcats! We look forward to Annie’s leadership and continued strong play when we return from break in January. Congrats on a great start to the season, Annie!
