Congratulations to this week’s Athletes of the Week!
Boys Varsity Baseball: David Thomas ‘20
David Thomas is our AOTW for varsity baseball. David was 2-5 with 4 RBI’s vs NMH on Saturday. David also pitched 2 scoreless innings vs NMH on Saturday striking out 6, which helped the DA nine improve to 2-0 in CNEPSBL play.
Girls Varsity Lacrosse: Mary Edmonds ‘19
Mary Edmonds is the GV Lax athlete of the week. She tallied 6 goals and 1 assist against Choate. Mary also had three goals and an assist in our victory over Andover.
Girls Varsity Tennis: Catalina Llorente ‘19
Catalina stepped up for the varsity team on Saturday for our match at Taft. This was her first singles start of the season and she was ready when her name was called. We ended up needing her win to take the overall match. Catalina lost a close first set 5-7, but would not quit. She rallied to a big second set win, 6-1. In the third set super tiebreaker Catalina clinched the match for Deerfield with a 10-7 victory. Catalina’s resilience in the face of an uphill battle after the first set is precisely the attitude Deerfield athletes need. Way to go, Catalina!
Girls Rowing: Kikka Giudici ‘20
Although Kikka has only just started rowing this spring, she has already established her presence on the girls rowing team. Day in and day out, she comes to practice with a positive attitude which is contagious. She always tries her best on every workout no matter the weather or any other circumstances. Despite just starting out, her 2k was already amongst some of the top scores! Additionally, she has demonstrated her persistence and willingness to learn and grow as an athlete while pushing those around her to be better and faster too. Rock on, Kikka!
Varsity Track & Field: Mina Liang ’19 & Peter Pulai ‘18
Track and Field’s athletes of the week this week are two students who put the team’s needs before their own wishes, showing commitment and self-sacrifice.
Girls: Mina Liang. Mina competed in the 4x100m relay, 200m, high jump, and the 4x400m relay. She scored in three of those events, and was willing to run the final one—the 4×4—despite being tired, cold, and ready to call it a day. Track teams thrive on that sort of team-first mentality.
Boys: Peter Pulai. Peter scored points in four events for Deerfield on Saturday: the 4x100m relay (1st), the 100m (3rd), the 200m (2nd), and the 4x400m relay (2nd). Running the 4×4 was an extra task for Peter—a bonus, if you will—after a busy, tiring day. He gathered his will and ran bravely through the wind to finish a great day for DA Track and Field and put an exclamation point of senior leadership on a great day for the boys’ team.
Boys Varsity Rowing: Charlie Pink ’18
While boys rowing may not have had a race this past weekend, the team stayed active with a good training session and some community service work at Camp Apex. Charlie has shown great leadership during the first few weeks of our season and consistently brings a positive attitude to our practices. He has been an integral part of developing a strong team culture at the boathouse. For these reasons and for the dominance he showed during three rounds of Gagaball at Camp Apex, Charlie Pink is our Athlete of the Week.
Girls Varsity Water Polo: Ruby Chase ’21 and Rosa Sun ’21
Ruby Chase ’21 and Rosa Sun ’21 scored the first official goals of their polo careers in a shortened contest against Loomis in which the teams played their beginners. Both girls also have handled playing time off the bench well in several varsity games.
Girls JV Lacrosse: Caleigh Manguilli ‘20
Caleigh has continued to work hard since the beginning of the season. She is willing to tackle any position in the field. Against Choate she defied gravity during each and every draw to get possession for her team. Caleigh comes to practice and games willing to work hard and pushes her teammates to match her enthusiasm. That is why she is this week’s JV girls lax athlete of the week.”
Boys JV Tennis: Connor Flannery ‘21
After a convincing 8-3 win in his doubles match with teammate Sam Bronckers, freshman Connor Flannery was asked to play up at the number four spot in singles competition. He rose to the occasion with a calm and cool demeanor on the court during his resilient 5-7, 6-4 (4) tiebreaker victory to help The Big Green gain a 7-0 victory over Taft on Saturday. Connor is a great teammate and his strong work ethic makes him a key part of the team’s success this season.
Boys JV Lacrosse: Ollie Pink ‘20
Ollie Pink ’20 provided a much-needed boost for the Big Green’s JV lacrosse team in big wins over Cardigan Mountain (9-8) and Choate (14-4). Ollie is a standout athlete who continues to improve his impact on the team through his hard work in practice every day. In the Cardigan game he was a tenacious defender, one of the leaders in ground balls while also contributing offensively in a close contest. He followed up that strong performance against rival Choate where he was once again all over the field. This time he led the team in scoring and took advantage of his athletic matchups by putting goals in the back of the net. We are excited to continue to see Ollie progress and lead as an integral part of a great group on the JV lax team.
Boys JV Baseball: Alex Smith ‘19
Smitty came in for back-to-back relief appearances and showed real grit in battling against our opponents. He also got some big hits for us as well!
Varsity Golf: Kimberly Stafford ‘19
Kimberly was the medalist for the Big Green in Wednesday’s win over Williston and Wilbraham, shooting a 1 under 35. She also shot 3 over 38 on Saturday against Exeter to help the Big Green earn their 3rd straight win of the season.
