Yesterday, varsity baseball improved to 3-0 in league play with a 6-2 road win against defending league champions Worcester Academy. With the win, the Big Green’s overall record improves to 3-2.
David Thomas was excellent on the mound pitching 7 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 ER and 7 K. Worcester scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning and Deerfield responded with 2 runs in the top of the 2nd inning. DA took the lead for good with a run in the 3rd inning and then added three insurance runs in the top of the 7th inning.
Owen MacPhee was the big bat for DA, going 3-5 with 2 RBI. Andy Pelc and Jeff MacDonald each had 2 hits on the afternoon. The DA defense was dominate all around, highlighted by the great infield play of 3B Javy Irizarry, SS Chris Camelio, 2B Jeff MacDonald, and 1B Henry Gustavson. Gustavson got his first start of the year at 1B as well as his first hit of the season.
To date this season, the Big Green’s other league wins have come against Cushing (5-1) and NMH (14-4).
The team returns to action this Saturday, April 21 in a doubleheader against league newcomer Providence Country Day at 1:00pm.
