Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to this week’s Athletes of the Week!

Girls Varsity Lacrosse: Hannah Swinerton ‘17

Hannah Swinerton is this week’s Girls Varsity lacrosse athlete of the week.  Hannah has been a leading contributor within our defensive unit throughout the season and had particularly strong performances against KUA, Pomfret, and Hotchkiss.

Varsity Track & Field: Lily Louis ’18 & Gozzy Nwogbo ‘18

Girls: Lily Louis ‘18

Lily Louis ’18: Lily won the 400m in her first race of the season at that distance, distancing herself from the field by more than three seconds.  Lily also scored in the Triple Jump (4th) and as the anchor leg of the girls’ 2nd place 4x400m relay team.

Boys: Gozzy Nwogbo ‘18

Gozzy Nwogbo ’18: Gozzy anchored the Big Green’s victorious 4x100m relay team, finished 2nd in the javelin, and raced to a 3rd place finish in the open 400m dash.  To top it off, Gozzy anchored Deerfield’s 4x400m relay which finished with a season’s best time 3:45.7.

Girls Varsity Tennis: Tori Waterfall ‘19

Tori has been performing at a high level for Deerfield’s Girls Varsity Tennis team all season. She has practiced hard and brought home wins for Deerfield at various positions. Tori is one half of a nearly undefeated doubles team, boasting a 7-1 record as a pair this season. Tori’s tenacity and skill make her a valuable member of our team. Last weekend against Choate, Tori played one of her best all around matches of the year. Her opponents were met with relentless ground strokes and more winners than her coach could count.

Girls Rowing: Alina O’Brien ‘17

Girls’ rowing’s athlete of the week is Alina O’Brien.  Senior Alina O’ Brien stepped up to exhibit a strong performance in the girls’ varsity third boat at the home regatta in Northampton on Saturday. She showed quiet resolve to make her boat stronger and faster in the water. Alina is a leader on the crew team and is easy to talk to, reaching out to support those who need it the most. She shows her devotion to the sport every day as she constantly pushes herself to accomplish new goals out on the river.

Varsity Baseball: Jared Pantalony ‘18

Jared Pantalony ’18 has continued to impress with several strong pitching performances.  His finest outing of the season was against powerhouse Andover last Saturday.  Pantalony came in relief in a tight 4-1 game and held the opponents in check.  The lefthander threw 2 1/3 shutout innings, striking out 2 and walking none.  He threw 27 pitches, 20 for strikes.

Boys Varsity Lacrosse: Ollie Hollo ‘18

Ollie Hollo ’18 was nominated as the boys varsity lacrosse AOTW for his performance against Avon Old Farms on Parents Weekend. He filled in for Jordan Ginder ’18 and Wiggle Kerbrat ’17 at the faceoff position and had several GB’s and caused turnovers in the 9-6 Deerfield victory.

Varsity Softball: Aurora Deveraux ‘20

Aurora Devereaux is the Varsity Softball athlete of the week.  She was asked to play a new position and catch a 65 mph fastball last week, not an easy task.  Aurora listens, learns, and makes progress every day.  Her defense behind the plate on Saturday kept Andover’s baserunners at bay, helping to secure Deerfield’s victory.  Thanks for your hard work, Ro!  Keep it up!

Girls JV Tennis: Acy Cai ‘20

Acy Cai is our girls’ JV tennis Athlete of the Week! Acy has been a standout for her positive attitude and determination to improve at tennis throughout the season. Acy is often the last on the court, continuing to work on her serves after practice is over. Monday afternoon was no exception, as Acy stayed late to compete against a member of the Bement boys’ JV team. She sailed to a smooth 8-3 victory by remaining patient and playing strong consistent tennis throughout the match, and demonstrated her usual good sportsmanship and honesty as she won gracefully. On Wednesday afternoon, Acy was the only member of our team to beat her Eaglebrook boys’ JV opponent, and has truly developed her serve throughout the season. Acy has had an excellent season of playing doubles and helping the team to a winning record. But even more important are her attitude on and off the court, willingness to hit with anyone on the team, and her intense will to improve! We are grateful to have her on the team!

Varsity Golf: Matt Brosseau ‘19

Matt Brosseau was a match saver last Wednesday. He shot a respectable 40 to help the team secure a victory!

JV Baseball: Alex Smith ‘19

Our Athlete of the Week is Alex Smith who pitched six strong innings against Andover on Saturday. He has been a consistent presence at the plate and has taken advantage of the opportunities late in the season to get on the mound.
