Just moments before the sun set on Wednesday, the Boys Thirds team celebrated its first defeat of Westminster in seven years. Deerfield dominated the game by building its drives from the back, thanks to strategic distribution from Sammy Sullivan ’25, Michael Hioe ’27, and Ryan Bai ’26—who was making his debut at center-back (his third new position this week) with only eleven field players on the active roster. Once on the attack, Deerfield retained possession with skillful touch and frequent passing, aided by heads-up play that helped find the holes in the Martlets’ back line. In the first half DA put up three points in five minutes, started by captain Luka Kokosadze ’25, followed by a well-placed penalty kick from holding midfielder Tommy Govi ’26, and capped by winger Isaac Shobola ’27. In the second half, the Deerfield bench was on its feet after the goal scored by rookie midfielder Jack Webb ’27 on a bouncing ball he put above the keeper’s outstretched arms. Webb got to take a curtain call when his teammates urged him to take the PK shortly after, which he sunk bottom right. After a number of galloping drives down the field late, forwards Victor Kibuuka ’26 and Shobola finally finished one with Kibuuka gracefully slipping through the back line and driving in Deerfield’s sixth goal on the ground. After a three-game losing streak that saw the team outscored 17-5, Junior A has found its grove and rides a three-game winning streak with a sterling 12-1 goal differential. They look forward to hosting Eaglebrook JV on Saturday afternoon in front of a crowd of their visiting families.
