The boys junior B footballers wrapped up their season with a 1-0 loss on the road to Cushing Academy on a bright, but seasonably blustery fall afternoon. The team finishes with a stellar 10-2 record, despite losing the last two matches on the road to tough opponents. Senior captains Brendan Butz ’23 and Morgan Haisman ’23 played their final career matches for Deerfield soccer. As a 3-year player, Butz will be particularly missed and leaves a big question mark at keeper for next season. Cushing started off the 1st half by keeping the ball mostly in the Deerfield end and were able to create a few scoring chances, but gradually, Deerfield were able to take over control of the run of play and created several chances of their own. Neither team was able to score, however, and the match remained scoreless at half-time. In the 39th minute, Cushing scored on a long-range effort from outside the box that snuck into the net, just below the crossbar. Deerfield continued to press at the other end and leading scorer Matias Cushman ’25 nearly equalized in the 49th minute, nailing a close effort off the post. Cushing pulled back into a defensive formation for most of the 2nd half, which created problems for Deerfield on the small, extremely narrow field. While there were a few good opportunities, Deerfield were unable to capitalize and the match ended 1-0 to Cushing.
