In front of a solid crowd that grew more numerous throughout the match, Deerfield hosted local rival NMH on Wednesday, emerging with a 3-0 victory.
Deerfield got off to a good start on the serving of Elle Stearns ‘23, moving out to an early 7-0 lead that we never relinquished. Serving and passing from Zoe Gavros ‘23 along with setting from Wuyee Ke ‘26 and Greta Trapp ‘25 allowed the Big Green to win the set, 25-12.
The second set was closer from the initial serve and while Deerfield maintained a lead throughout, it was never by more than a few points. Harmoni Dobbins ‘26 had some good blocks as well as an emphatic kill and Deerfield was able to take the set, 25-18.
NMH came out the stronger team in the 3rd set and, coupled with some Deerfield errors, it was the Hoggers who extended out to a lead that got as large as 4-12 before Deerfield started to work its way back on serving from Ke and hits from Cate Shanahan ‘23 and Evie Mokarow ‘24. Deerfield still trailed 17-20 when Gavros stepped to the service line and helped Deerfield take its first lead of the set, 22-20, before NMH got the side-out. The score stayed tight and after Deerfield took the lead, 25-24, it was Margot McAuliffe ‘24 who earned the final point on an excellent service ace, for a set score of 26-24.
Thanks to NMH for the good match today. And thanks to varsity field hockey for their support after their practice as well as all the fans who came to cheer us on.
