In its first official game of the season, the Boys’ Junior A soccer team defeated Vermont Academy’s Junior Varsity team 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Saxtons River. Ninth-grader Songa Rwamucyo got the scoring started with a skillful free kick that forward Peter Kurto deflected into the goal off his body. In the second half, Kurto scored after receiving a strong pass across the box from rookie outside midfielder Tom Spater. Vermont got in foul trouble late in the match and Deerfield capitalized with two excellent penalty kicks, a powerful drive by new sophomore Malachai York and a finesse shot by Rwamucyo. Now the team prepares for its first home game, Saturday’s contest against Taft.
