With the memory of being blown out by Taft last year fresh in their minds, the Deerfield Boys’ Junior A soccer team avenged themselves in a 2-1 victory at home under a hot sun on Saturday afternoon. Deerfield played a complete game, with strong contributions up and down the roster from a team clearly getting more comfortable working together. The offense had more than four shots on goal for every one Taft attempted. But despite Deerfield’s strong showing, the teams went into halftime scoreless. The players came out of the huddle resolving to score in the first five minutes and, four minutes in, rookie Songa Rwamucyo capped off a strong offensive attack by placing a shot beyond the keeper’s reach in the upper-left corner. Ten minute later, junior Will Schoelkopf took a low shot that snuck under the leaping goalie. Defensive back Alex Strait continued buoying the team with his power and head’s-up play, and Darien Chiang joined a promising young core of midfielders.
