Boys Jr A Soccer traveled to the Williston Northampton School on Wednesday afternoon and came away with a 5–0 win. Hard work in shooting drills in practice this week combined with continued dedication to ball movement and playing away from pressure propelled the team to its finest performance on the season. Junior striker Will Schoelkopf scored the game’s first two goals, both strong low shots following expert feeds from fellow forward, and reigning team Athlete of the Week, Jared Faux. To start the second half, Faux scored a goal of his own thanks to a beautiful give-and-go drive by halfback Gale Gai and fullback Taeeon Kong. A few minutes later, Deerfield put together another great combination when midfielder Songa Rwamucyo kicked a textbook cross to Schoelkopf, who sent the ball into the goalkeeper’s box, where first-year forward Peter Kurto drove it into the net. The team’s final goal sent the players on the bench to their feet, as junior Noah Depp—famous for his lightning speed and sometimes overzealous shots—scored for the first time on the season, hustling to meet a cross from Faux at just the right moment. Not to be overshadowed by the scoring, the defense kept Williston from taking any shots on goal for the whole game, and first-year Tom Spater made his debut at keeper. Deerfield gets back to work on Thursday preparing for Sunday’s contest at home against Andover.
