The Boys Junior A Soccer team racked up its third victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Wilbraham & Monson Academy Junior Varsity team 1-0 in Wilbraham. The winning goal came in a brilliant header by senior defensive back Alex Strait off a perfectly placed corner kick by ninth-grader Songa Rwamucyo. Throughout the match, the team played as a unit, visibly maturing from earlier in the season in their ball-handling and offensive attack. Ninth-grader Tyler Ettelson played stand-out defense in the backfield. Will Yang made two beautiful free kicks, which even earned him plaudits from the referees. And juniors Noah Depp and Will Schoelkopf led the team with their hustle and intelligence. After a game that saw Deerfield out-shoot its opponent 11-3, Deerfield needs to continue working on its finishing as it looks to Thursday’s game at home against Suffield.
