Soccer, Girls: Junior Varsity defeats Westminster

Event Details

The season opener was a successful one for the Doors in their match against the Westminster Martlets. From the very first whistle, Deerfield pushed the tempo and the ball was immediately in the Westminster defensive end. Though there were several great plays in the midfield and offensive end, including some stellar ball movement from Kiki Brainard (’22) and some amazing offensive rushes and shots from Ellia Chiang (’21), Kikka Giudici (’20), and Liz Tarazi (’19), it wasn’t until 19:35 when the first goal was scored by Ellia Chiang and assisted by Emily Stonestreet (’19). That goal opened the floodgates and was shortly followed by a great play from Whitney Vogt (’20) to Emily Stonestreet for a goal. To finish the half Morgan Moriarity (’22) netted a beautiful shot from a strong pass from Sarah Stonestreet (’21).

The second half was categorized by strong defensive play. Sarah Wright (’20) and Kristine Yang (’21) consistently played tough defense, sacrificing their bodies to keep the ball out of the defensive end. Ali Thomas (’21) and Isabella Geraci (’19) also stood out for their great speed and defensive recovery. Finally Kat Hioe (’20) and Grace Arcoleo (’22) both made amazing saves. Westy notched two goals against off of a corner and an unfortunate deflection within the ’18. Deerfield, however, was not to be stopped, and Kat Hioe (’20) received a cross from Kiki Brainard for the fourth and final goal. The JV squad worked well together and are looking forward to their next match.
